Welcome to the Scott Svonkin for Los Angeles Community College 2011 website. I am running for the Los Angeles Community College Board because, like you, I am deeply concerned with improving the educational opportunities for our college students and the well being of our community, and I believe that our Community College system is central to this mission. I am running for the Community College Board because I believe that I’d bring a valuable wealth of experience to the Board. I am proud to be a product of Community Colleges and to have deep personal and professional connections throughout Los Angeles County, having served as Student Trustee at a Community College and later taught a class at Valley College, worked with Mayor Bradley, been a businessman with Prudential Health Care and ran my own consulting business. I currently work as Senior Advisor to Sheriff Lee Baca, and serve as Vice President of my local School Board and on a number of other boards, including as Vice President of the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association. I am also currently serving as Vice Chairman of the California Credit Union a one billion dollar educational cooperative. While the LACCD currently does a great job of preparing our young people for professions or entrance into four year university, I believe that there is even more that our Colleges can do to serve our students and our community. I’d be able to assist in the strengthening of LACCD by helping to bring about partnerships with the community, and by working diligently to improve the College environment for students, faculty and staff.
